DR. DERIC MCNISH

Dr. Deric McNish, Assistant Professor of Theatre: Acting, Voice, and Speech, earned a PhD from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he worked with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival and taught classes in acting and musical theatre.  He received an MFA in acting from Case Western Reserve University and the Cleveland Play House.  Deric has worked professionally as an actor, director, dialect coach, and dramaturg.

As an actor, Deric has performed at theatres such as the Cleveland Play House, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, the Porthouse Theatre, the Ohio Shakespeare Festival, on national tours, and in NYC venues ranging from Shakespeare in the Park(ing Lot) to the Metropolitan Opera.  Deric's film and television work includes Guiding Light on CBS and NBC's Third Watch.  He is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors’ Equity.

Deric’s research focuses on new and inclusive approaches to actor training for graduate and undergraduate students.  He wrote his dissertation on disability in performance and the pedagogy of actor training in higher education.  He recently presented research about training actors with disabilities at the Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) conference in London, as well as at the Mid-America Theatre Conference, where he also presented his work on devised theatre and universal design for the creative process.  He created a new course in collaboration with the English Language Center that uses theatre techniques to improve language skills for non-native speakers as well as a new course on disability in performance for MSU’s Integrated Arts and Humanities program.  
 

At MSU, Deric directed the Thespie Award winning production of Off With Her Head, an original devised play based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. He directed Ruthless! the Musical for MSU’s Summer Circle Theatre. Deric directs the BFA Industry Showcase in New York City and in the spring of 2015, Deric will direct MSU’s production of HAIR at the Wharton Center.
